Individual school districts in Texas will be allowed to decide if students can graduate with the state standardized tests being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gov. Greg Abbot announced in March that the requirement to take the state of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exams to move on to the next grade level or to graduate will be canceled statewide this school year, but school districts will still be allowed to decide if these students can move on or not without taking STAAR exams, according to the Texas Tribune.

The Texas Education Agency has given administrators the authority to decide if students can move up or graduate this year based off of their grades and teachers' opinions, according to the Texas Tribune.

Normally, fifth and eighth graders have to pass the STAAR to move on to the next grade, the Texas Tribune reported, and high school students have to pass five subject-specific STAARs in order to graduate.

Any high school seniors set to graduate will not have to take end-of-course exams this year. Instead, a committee will decide if they can graduate, according to the Texas Tribune.
