Highland Park Independent School District issued the following announcement.
The district will join school district's across Texas during the last week of January to learn about the Holocaust through age-appropriate lessons.
January 25-29 is Holocaust Remembrance Week, which was established through legislation signed by Governor Greg Abbott. Throughout the week HPISD and schools across Texas will use age-appropriate materials and lessons to educate students about the Holocaust and inspire in students a sense of responsibility to recognize and uphold human value and to prevent future atrocities.
The Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission developed grade-level appropriate materials for teacher use. For example, materials for students in grades pre-K through 6 are designed to provide an understanding of terms and concepts like being an upstander, tolerance, community, and anti-bullying.
Holocaust Remembrance Week supports the HPISD's commitment to inclusive and respectful schools.
