Port Neches-Groves (PNGISD) and Nederland Independent School Districts (NISD) were among more than 100 schools in Texas listed as high performers in a recent ranking by Backgroundchecks.org.
Backgroundchecks.org uses several variables to find where K-12 schools rank. It looks at school funding per student, percent of students scoring above proficient in standardized state reading and language tests, percent of students scoring above proficient in standardized state math tests, student-to-teacher ratio, and graduation rate.
Of the more than 100 schools ranked in Texas, PNGISD came in at No. 37 and NISD was No. 54.
Port Neches-Groves High Principal Scott Ryan was quoted in the Port Neches News as saying he wasn't surprised about the rankings.
“We certainly believe that we are one of the 'best,'” Ryan said. “You always hear me say we are the best high school in the universe and I say that about the district, too. We have a school board that believes in us, believes in the community, and is willing to put resources into educating our kids. It’s a great place to live and a great place to work.”
Port Neches-Groves High had an attendance rate of 94.6%, with 98.5% graduation rate in 2019, the Teacher Education Agency reported.
“This honor is attributed to our hardworking staff members that give their best every single day to make a difference in our students' lives,” Julie Gauthier, PNGISD assistant superintendent, told the Port Neches News.
PNGISD's high ranking was a reflection of the community effort put into the school, Ryan said.
“One thing I am really proud of is the advancements we've made in our career and technology programs,” Ryan told the Port Neches News. “We are also big on extracurricular activities. You almost have to try and not be involved, we have so many opportunities for everybody. We feel like that all helps kids in school and gives them a reason to be excited about coming to class.”
Nederland Independent School District had an attendance rating of 95.2% and a 92.5% graduation rate in 2019.
“Nederland ISD has a long-standing tradition of excellence,” Assistant Superintendent Stuart Kieschnick was quoted in the Port Neches News as saying. “The success of our district comes from a strong community that supports public education. Our students, faculty, and staff are dedicated to achieving the highest of standards with hard work and dedication.”
Highland Park Independent School District in Dallas and Friendswood Independent School District in Friendswood took the first two spots on the rankings.
