KIPP Texas issued the following announcement.
KIPP TEXAS: Kipp Texas-Austin Demands Accountability and Justice Following Shooting of Student by Austin Police
As George Floyd was laid to rest yesterday in his hometown of Houston, our own Little KIPPster continues his road to recovery after being shot in the head by an Austin police officer while peacefully protesting. Our thoughts and prayers are with the KIPP Brave High School student and his family.
We are outraged by this senseless act against our student. This and many other incidents and hate crimes across the nation painfully continue to remind us that there is much work to be done, and there is not equity.
Racism and hatred of any kind can never be tolerated. When our community is hurting, we all are impacted.
Let us be clear. As we move forward, we will not work with an entity where conduct of the nature displayed by the Austin Police Department (APD) is tolerated. We will continue to demand accountability and justice from APD and the City of Austin in the name of our children and our communities. Several members of our staff testified in front of the Austin City Council last week as private citizens to seek justice and change, and I'm incredibly proud of how they showed up on behalf of themselves and our communities. We are not done. We are just beginning.
Black lives matter.

As George Floyd was buried yesterday in his hometown of Houston, our own little KIPPster continues on his way to recovery after being shot in the head by an Austin police officer while protesting peacefully. Our thoughts and prayers go out to KIPP student Austin Brave High School and his family. We have been in frequent communication with the family to make sure they have all the resources they need; We ask everyone to respect the family's wishes for space and privacy during these difficult times.
We are outraged by this senseless act against our student. This and many more hate incidents and crimes across our nation continue to painfully remind us that there is still much more work to do and that there is no equity.
Racism and hatred of any kind can never be tolerated. When our community is hurt, we are all affected.
Let us be clear. As we move forward, we will not work with any entity where the conduct demonstrated by the Austin Police Department (APD) is tolerated. We will continue to demand accountability and justice from APD and the City of Austin on behalf of our children and communities. Adult KIPPsters individually testified as private citizens in front of the Austin City Council last week to seek justice and change, and I am incredibly proud of how they presented themselves and our communities. We are not done. We just started.
Black lives matter.
