The Texas School Alliance (TSA) and the Texas Urban Council of Superintendents (TUC) urged Gov. Greg Abbott not to reopen schools until COVID-19 is under control, according to a Texas AFT news release.
TSA and TUC sent a letter to Abbott noting that schools will see a reduction in funding if they reopen due to lower attendance rates.
In their letter, they asked for the commissioner of education to waive student attendance requirements, they ask for setting a floor average for the next year's daily attendance and for the ability to allow districts to be flexible in the design of their instructional systems.
"These are the necessary steps to take to ensure the health and safety of all students without districts fearing the loss of much-needed funding," the Texas AFT said in the press release. "Countless educators, school staff, and now superintendents have come together to express their concerns. We don’t always agree with superintendents, but when we do, it’s time for the governor to listen."
