Frisco Independent School District issued the following announcement.
This past spring the bookshelves of Frisco ISD libraries sat untouched during eLearning while students accessed virtual resources and books. Students set new records by accessing digital books and audiobooks at more than five times the regular usage rate with more than 96,000 ebooks and audiobooks read.
“We had an increase in usage of ebooks in the spring, but librarians know that connecting students with books of interest and getting those books in their hands is where the opportunity for academic success lies,” said Stacy Cameron, coordinator of library and media services.
With this in mind, Frisco ISD librarians are mobilizing their libraries so that Virtual Academy students will have the opportunity to request and pick up books from their campus starting in early September and throughout the school year. Students who begin on-campus instruction September 3 will continue to have regular access to their campus library.
“Despite the abundance of digital books, studies continue to show that most people prefer to read from a physical book,” Cameron said. “FISD librarians are prepared to make physical books available to all students whether they access their education online or on-campus.”
Personalization will be an important component of the “Library to Go” program. Through either an interest survey or communication with their librarian, students will share general likes and the librarian will recommend books and customize book bundles to fit their interests.
“This is knowing the name and needs of our students at its best,” Cameron said. “It is important for students who are learning from home to feel part of the campus community, and the library is honored to be part of that.”
While the procedures may look different between campuses, the campus library website will be the best place to start for information. Each website links to a searchable catalog, information on digital resources for research and an “Ask the Librarian” button where a child can directly connect with the librarian.
“We are excited to get books back in the hands of FISD students,” Cameron said. “Librarians want to make connections with kids in a meaningful and purposeful way.”
Frisco ISD values literacy and reading and the vital role they play in the foundational learning of all children. Parents with questions about this new offering can reach out to their campus librarian for direction.
