Twenty educators have been named as candidates for the upcoming election to fill the teacher member seat on the Maryland State Board of Education. The election, organized by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) in partnership with the State Board, will take place from November 3 to November 17.
The open seat was previously held by Rachel McCusker. The successful candidate will serve a four-year term beginning July 1, 2026. To be eligible, candidates must have at least five years of active teaching experience in Maryland schools.
The list of candidates includes Alex Bohaska, Anya Joyce Brown, Shirley Byrd, Alex Cooper, Seidrick Drew, Theresa Mitchell Dudley, Ivy D. Gary, Kellie Harvey, Kelli I. Hickey, Julian E. Lazarus, Kelly Tibbetts, Luis Abner Lopéz-Febres, Nicole Murray-Lewis, Ravi Pillalarmarri, Shannon Reed, Sandra E. Saint Léger, Sharrina Witherspoon Tucker and Tatanisha “Tiki” Love.
Eligible voters are those who hold an active Maryland educator certificate or license with at least one teaching area as of October 10. According to state law: "the individual with the most votes will be forwarded to the Governor for appointment to the State Board."
