The Texas Education Agency (TEA) in partnership with the Texas Dept. of State Health Services (DSHS) have created a web page tracking the number of students, teachers and administrators who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the state’s public schools, according to a TEA press release.

The number of on-campus cases of the virus as of Sept. 17 was 2,344 out of an estimated 1.1 million students who have been attending school since the start of the 2020-21 school year.

The total count among school staffers is 2,175.

The TEA COVID-19 website will be updated each week the report said and will include revised data form each school district in Texas.

Tests for antibodies, showing a previous infection, will not be part of the reporting.

The report said the close monitoring of the data would provide tracking of the virus in schools and allow the setting of policy in combating its spread.

Schools are required to inform parents, teachers and campus staff of positive cases of the virus contracted during instruction or school activities.
