McAllen Independent School District (ISD) Superintendent Jose Gonzalez was recently named as the 2020 Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) after beating out foru other finalist superintendents from across the state.

In his 22nd year with the district, Gonzalez has been the superintendent at McAllen ISD for the last four, according to a press release posted to the Texas Association of School Boards website. The other finalists included Roland Hernandez, Corpus Christi ISD, Region 2; Michelle Barrow, Newton ISD, Region 5; Jamie Wilson, Denton ISD, Region 11; and Becky McCutchen, Alpine ISD, Region 18.

In selecting Gonzalez for the award, the committee said that he “is working to make dreams come true for students at every level by taking a hands-on approach to leadership, being inclusive, and providing the right enrichment to students at the right time,” according to the release.

Accomplishments cited by the committee in choosing Gonzalez included the close monitoring paid to performance, with the following of student progress and assessing of state-recommended learning objectives playing a key role in gaining an A rating for the district, according to the release. With that goes targeted instruction for individual students to keep each on track with learning objectives.

All five school districts with finalist superintendents will receive an award from Balfour, which underwrites the program, according to the release. Balfour will also present Gonzalez with a Superintendent of the Year ring.

In order to be selected as a Superintendent of the Year, superintendents must first be nominated by their school boards, according to the release. Those nominees are then narrowed down by regional selection committees, which each region sending one superintendent to be considered by the state selection committee.

The other regional winners were Marshall Scott III, Bay City ISD, Region 3; Danny Massey, Brazosport ISD, Region 4; Andrew Peters, Caldwell ISD, Region 6; Jerry Gibson, Marshall ISD, Region 7; Greg Bower, Como-Pickton CISD, Region 8; Todd Wilson, Chillicothe ISD, Region 9; Marc Smith, Duncanville ISD, Region 10; David Edison, Aquilla ISD, Region 12; Roger Dees, Giddings ISD, Region 13; Joe Young, Brownwood ISD, Region 15; Darryl Flusche, Canyon ISD, Region 16; Juan Cabrera, El Paso ISD, Region 19; and Thomas Price Jr., Boerne ISD, Region 20.
