Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) said $30 million in federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding would be made available to students across the state who have disabilities and have suffered disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report in the Texas Classroom Teachers Association website said up to $1,500 per student will be available to provide such services as private tutoring, educational programs and therapy services.

Eligible families are those whose students were enrolled in Texas public schools for the 2020-21 school year during the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. To qualify students will have conditions such as intellectual and developmental disabilities, visual impairment or hearing loss, autism, multiple disabilities and others.

The TEA will handle the disbursements via online accounts and plans to open applications in late 2020 for a four-month period ending on Jan. 31, 2022, the report said.
