The President of the Texas State Teacher’s Association (TSTA) Ovidia Molina issued a statement regarding TSTA support over cancellation of STAAR testing for this year.
In the statement, Molina writes “The Texas State Teachers Association applauds and supports the efforts of 68 members of the Texas House, both Republicans and Democrats, who have called on the state education commissioner to seek the necessary federal waivers to cancel STAAR testing for this school year.”
The actions come in response to the extraordinary circumstances and strains placed on students and educators alike due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Molina continued in the statement, saying “TSTA started calling for a suspension of STAAR testing in June because standardized testing should be the last priority for students, educators and policymakers during the middle of a deadly pandemic, which now is getting worse.”
For now, the TSTA and Molina will advocate for similar perspective to those of the legislators who wrote to the TX education commissioner, who seek to “[provide] high-quality public education with an emphasis on ensuring the health and safety of students and educators.”
