The Texas American Federation of Teachers (AFT) wants to ensure teachers and school employees are on the list to receive initial offerings of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“We continually hear how important it is to get teachers and students back to in-person instruction, so it makes perfect sense to protect the people that would be on our school campuses,” Texas AFT President Zeph Capo said in a post on the Texas AFT website. “Remember, though, with that strategy you are helping safeguard adults on campus, but you’re not adding too much more protection for the students who get infected at school, and then possibly spread it to their families or the community.”

The Texas AFT website states frontline workers will be prioritized to receive the 1.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines expected to arrive in Texas this month. While the Texas Health and Human Services has recommended school nurses are included in initial vaccination offerings, other school employees haven’t been mentioned.
