A recent survey conducted by Teacher Tapp highlights ongoing challenges in U.S. classrooms, where behavior disruptions continue to impede instructional time. The findings were published on the organization's website on February 28.

According to the survey, a significant number of teachers across various grade levels report losing instructional time due to classroom disruptions. Among elementary school educators, 94% experience some level of disruption, with nearly half losing more than five minutes per lesson. Middle school teachers face similar issues, with 90% encountering disruptions and 50% losing five or more minutes per session. In high schools, 78% of teachers report behavior-related interruptions, with 35% losing over five minutes of teaching time.

A related Gallup study involving over 110,000 students from 128 schools suggests that student engagement and hope are positively correlated with academic achievement in subjects such as math and reading. This indicates that discipline issues affecting engagement can negatively impact learning outcomes.

Over the past decade, trends in school bullying have evolved. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, weekly reports of in-school bullying decreased from 23% in the 2009–10 academic year to 15% in 2019–20. However, instances of cyberbullying have doubled from 8% to 16%, underscoring the growing influence of social media and digital communication on student interactions. While progress has been made in reducing physical bullying within schools, the rise in online harassment highlights the need for updated policies and enhanced digital safety education.

Parents express concerns about teacher burnout and staffing shortages contributing to educators leaving the profession. Between February 2020 and May 2022, approximately 300,000 public school teachers left their positions. Additionally, three out of ten teachers are contemplating leaving their jobs this school year, with 40% considering careers outside education. The number of bachelor's degrees awarded in education has also declined by half since 1970, exacerbating the crisis in the teacher pipeline.

Teacher Tapp is described on its website as a research-driven survey platform that gathers daily insights from educators across the United States. By engaging directly with teachers, it aims to provide policymakers and school leaders with firsthand perspectives on educational challenges and trends shaping today's classrooms.
