President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at dismantling key functions of the U.S. Department of Education. This move has prompted a response from National PTA President Yvonne Johnson, who expressed concern over the potential impacts on public education.
Johnson highlighted that nearly half of the positions within the department are being terminated as part of this initiative. She emphasized that the department was established to ensure equal educational access for all Americans, regardless of their background or circumstances. Johnson stated, “Dismantling and diminishing the capacity of the department breaks America’s promise of education for all children and is a severe threat to ensuring every child has every opportunity to reach their full potential.”
The executive order could affect programs such as Title I funding, which supports schools with high numbers of low-income students, and grants under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The Office of Civil Rights, tasked with preventing discrimination in schools, may also be impacted.
Johnson argued that these programs are crucial for improving academic outcomes and student well-being. She warned against reducing resources at a time when educational challenges demand more support.
National PTA is urging advocates to oppose efforts to dismantle the Department of Education and instead back a congressional resolution supported by Representative Suzanne Bonamici. The organization remains committed to promoting educational equity and supporting investments in programs beneficial to all children.
National PTA includes families, educators, and community leaders focused on children's educational success and family engagement in schools. It operates as a nonprofit association advocating for public education.
