The Pennsylvania Insurance Department, the Department of Human Services, and Pennie, the state's health insurance marketplace, commemorated the 15th anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The celebration underscored how increased insurance coverage among Pennsylvanians contributes to healthier communities and reduced costs.
Michael Humphreys, Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner, remarked on the impact of the ACA: "The Affordable Care Act put great coverage within reach for millions of Pennsylvanians, many for the first time. Gone are the days of limited coverage, preexisting condition exclusions, and kicking our children off our health plans after high school. Comprehensive health insurance has never been more affordable and within reach for consumers in the Commonwealth."
Since its enactment on March 23, 2010, the ACA has facilitated access to quality healthcare through Medicaid expansion and Pennie. As a result, Pennsylvania's uninsured rate decreased from 10% in 2010 to approximately 5.3% today. The recent Open Enrollment Period ended with nearly 497,000 enrollments in Pennie—the highest ever recorded in Pennsylvania.
Key speakers at the event included Terese DeLaPlaine from Hamilton Health Center; Michael Humphreys; Devin Trolley from Pennie; Secretary Val Arkoosh from DHS; and Joanna Rosenhein from PA Health Access Network.
