Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis and Jessica Shirley, the Acting Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), attended the grand opening of the Blacklick Treatment Facility. This new Abandoned Mine Drainage (AMD) Treatment Facility aims to address water quality issues by eliminating uncontrolled discharges of untreated mine water into Blacklick Creek. The facility is expected to improve approximately 25 miles of streams in the Blacklick Creek and Conemaugh River areas within Indiana and Cambria counties.
Lt. Gov. Austin Davis emphasized community support, stating, "Many communities like Vintondale or my hometown of McKeesport feel forgotten or left behind by leaders in Washington and Harrisburg," adding that he and Governor Shapiro are committed to investing in these areas.
Jessica Shirley highlighted the significance of addressing AMD issues, noting, "Abandoned Mine Drainage is a serious problem and affects approximately 5,500 miles of streams in Pennsylvania." She expressed optimism about reducing this figure by another 25 miles with the new facility's operation. According to Shirley, "This new facility will not only change the chemistry and color of the water but the lives of the people who will now be able to enjoy it."
The event included participation from local community members and elected officials who toured the facility to understand its impact on regional water quality.
