Governors from across the United States are re-evaluating how success is measured in education, with a focus on aligning with the demands of technology and the evolving job market. Grades, test scores, and diplomas have traditionally been important indicators but are no longer considered adequate on their own for assessing readiness for college or a career.

In Colorado, several programs are underway to assist students in the transition to the workforce or higher education. Among these is Colorado's teacher apprenticeship program designed for aspiring educators. This program offers structured, on-the-job training alongside experienced teachers, recognizes prior classroom experience, and provides credit for relevant academic instruction. Participants receive payment for their work.

Furthermore, FutureForward at Bollman provides high school students with opportunities to earn industry certificates and college credits in fields such as automotive technology, cybersecurity, and medical science. Graduates can enter the workforce with qualifications allowing them to secure well-paying jobs right away. Similarly, Colorado Early Colleges charter schools enable students to simultaneously earn a high school diploma and an associate’s degree, facilitating quicker and cost-effective completion of college education.

"Through our bipartisan National Governors Association (NGA) initiative Let’s Get Ready! governors across the country are working with education leaders, parents and students to reexamine our assumptions, innovate to more effectively measure outcomes and do more of what works," stated NGA Chair Colorado Governor Jared Polis. He expressed that to ensure successful futures for students and a thriving economy, it is essential to move beyond the current education paradigm.

This call for change was featured in the Washington Post in a letter published on 21 March 2025.
