An interview with Esther Ohito, an Associate Professor of English & Literacy Education at the Department of Learning and Teaching, reveals her latest research endeavor. Dr. Ohito's project explores how knowledge is socially and culturally constructed, influenced by geographic and cultural contexts. By focusing on the Luo people’s language and literature in Kenya, the study aims to contribute to social justice education.

Dr. Ohito begins by quoting Ralph Ellison's saying, “Geography is fate,” noting its relevance to her research. She emphasizes how culture and geography shape ways of knowing and being, and how this informs her project at Maseno University in Western Kenya. Her research seeks to engage with issues of power and oppression to illuminate how situated knowledge can aid in promoting decolonization and a more equitable global future.

Discussing her motivations, Dr. Ohito highlights the linguistic diversity of Africa, referencing Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o's work. She aims to add to scholarly conversations by focusing on the Luo language and literature within a social justice framework.

On her methodological approach, Dr. Ohito identifies as a qualitative researcher advocating for "promiscuous methodologies." These methods value theoretical and methodological adaptation in response to real-world experiences, allowing her to challenge conventional notions of legitimate research.

Looking ahead, Dr. Ohito is collaborating with Maureen Olel, Dean of the School of Education at Maseno University, on a book. Tentatively titled "Education, Liberation, and JoLuo of Western Kenya: Socially Just Teaching Through Indigenous Language, Literature, and Culture," it will involve contributions from faculty and students and will be written in both English and Dholuo.
