Idaho Governor Brad Little has enacted a refundable tax credit bill, formalizing the state's first school choice initiative. Similar programs have been established across the nation, marking an expansion in educational options accessible to all students.

Families are eligible to receive a tax credit up to $5,000 per student to offset various educational costs, including tuition, books, and transportation. The program's application process is set to commence in January 2026, covering qualifying expenses from 2025.

Robert Enlow, EdChoice President and CEO, commented, "The parent-driven revolution for educational freedom is stronger than ever, and today’s historic move by Idaho to pass its first school choice program is a powerful testament to this momentum."

Idaho joins the ranks of other states offering similar tax credit programs, being the fifth with a refundable tax credit and the 34th nationwide offering private school choice. The initiative ensures participation for all students, prioritizing those from lower-income families if applications exceed funding caps. Advanced payments are available for families with income limitations.

Tax credit programs provide parental relief on state income tax for educational expenses, with excess credit refunded to parents.
