Kathy Gebhardt Board Member | Colorado Department of Education
The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) has announced a significant increase in applications for the 2026 Teacher of the Year program. The department recorded 419 applications from educators across 68 school districts, marking over four times the applications received last year. Over 1,800 educators were invited to apply for the program following a statewide nomination process.
Education Commissioner Susana Córdova commented on this achievement: "The incredible response shows just how much Colorado values education and the amazing teachers who go above and beyond every day." Córdova expressed enthusiasm for educators sharing their stories and elevating the teaching profession.
The applicant pool reflects Colorado’s geographic diversity, with 52% from rural and small rural school districts. This year, the program's nomination and application process was offered in both English and Spanish, resulting in contributions from bilingual educators and broadening representation within Colorado's educator workforce.
Tiffany Anderson, Boettcher Foundation Vice President of Grants and Programs, reaffirmed their support, stating, "We firmly believe in the value of education and are committed to the academic success of every Colorado student."
Over the next three weeks, a team of more than 40 volunteers will review applications. The department will invite 15-20 semi-finalists for a second application phase with interviews and essay questions. Finalists will be announced in September 2025.
The winner will represent Colorado in the Council of Chief State School Officers’ National Teacher of the Year program, to be announced in October 2025. The program seeks to honor exemplary K–12 educators who show teaching excellence and leadership in their communities, backed by support from the Boettcher Foundation and partners.
The CDE aims to create equitable educational environments, serving the state’s 178 school districts to improve student outcomes and ensure access to high-quality schools.
