Governor Josh Shapiro introduced a suite of new consumer protection tools aimed at assisting Pennsylvanians in reporting scams and addressing financial and insurance-related concerns. This initiative is a response to weakened federal consumer protections, as indicated by recent federal developments leaving consumer protection work to the states.

The Shapiro Administration unveiled a centralized system consisting of a consumer protection hotline, website, and email. Residents of Pennsylvania can report concerns involving financial transactions, health insurance claims, and student loans through these platforms. The contact tools are 1-866-PACOMPLAINT (1-866-722-6675), pa.gov/consumer, and consumer@pa.gov.

"As Attorney General, I created a Consumer Financial Protection Unit to crack down on predatory lenders and protect vulnerable Pennsylvanians - seniors, students, and military families," said Governor Shapiro. "Now as Governor, my Administration is continuing that work - launching new tools for Pennsylvanians to have one clear place to turn when they need help."

The tools are intended to simplify the process for residents to file complaints and seek assistance. Governor Shapiro expressed confidence in Pennsylvania's robust consumer protection laws and the capacity of state agencies like the Pennsylvania Insurance Department and the Department of Banking and Securities to advocate for consumers. "Whether it's a denied insurance claim, a payday loan trap, or a student loan scam, these agencies are empowered to take action and deliver real results for the people of Pennsylvania."

Among those present at the announcement were Secretary Wendy Spicher of the Department of Banking and Securities, Consumer Services Specialist Jonathan Smith, Commissioner Michael Humphreys of the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, Deputy Insurance Commissioner David Buono, Executive Director Debby Freedman of Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, and Tom Lynch, President of the Mortgage Bankers Association of Eastern PA.
