Dr. Denise Furlong and Dr. Keri Orange-Jones have combined their extensive teaching experience to author a new book aimed at novice educators. Titled "Learners First: Purpose and Practicality in Your Early Years of Teaching," the book serves as a guide for student teachers and mentorship programs.

"I want readers to understand that this book is a springboard to help them become effective educators and create a sustainable career," Dr. Orange-Jones stated.

The authors present insights from teachers, educational colleagues, and novice educators, aiming for the book to be read by both veteran and new teachers as they reflect on their growth. "We envision this book as one that veteran educators and new teachers can read together and reflect on their growth," said Dr. Furlong.

The 10 chapters are written in a conversational style, with contributions from both authors encouraging lifelong learning among readers. "It covers many things today’s teachers should know to help them segue into a successful teaching career," explained Dr. Orange-Jones, adding that it is only the beginning due to the ever-evolving nature of education.

Dr. Orange-Jones completed her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at Rutgers Graduate School of Education (GSE), where she met Dr. Furlong during her dissertation defense on teacher evaluation and self-efficacy.

"Of all my collegiate experiences, Rutgers is my favorite institution," expressed Dr. Orange-Jones, praising the support received from her dissertation chair and committee.

Dr. Furlong earned her Ed.M. in Language Education with an ESL certification and her Ed.D. in Literacy Education from GSE, highlighting how the institution prepares teachers for success based on current educational landscapes.

"I hold my head up high with my Rutgers degrees," remarked Dr. Furlong regarding her academic journey at GSE.

Throughout "Learners First," the authors stress creating classroom environments conducive to continuous learning: "Education needs the best and the brightest... If the teacher is kind, patient, supportive, and focused on being a learner, then those students will be inspired to do the same."

"Learners First: Purpose and Practicality in Your Early Years of Teaching" is available online through Corwin.
