The University of Miami recently hosted the inaugural Simon Fellows Competition, an event organized by the School of Education and Human Development. This competition is a key part of the Simon Fellowship Professional Development Program, funded by Stacey and Sean Simon. The program aims to provide sports administration students with externship opportunities and access to professional development resources.
Brandon Warner, a student from California, won the competition with his proposal to introduce Professional Bull Riding (PBR) to Miami Beach. His idea impressed the panel of industry judges. Warner's research highlighted that "franchise valuations have shot up over 600% in just three years," indicating significant growth potential in this sport.
Ryan Vance secured second place with his project focused on drowning prevention in underserved communities through hydrofoiling, a water sport gaining popularity on social media. Vance noted that "hydrofoiling is perfect because it transforms fear into excitement."
Brett Lasky and Liam Szymonski were also recognized for their contributions. Lasky analyzed the Pro Volleyball Federation while managing two internships, stating, "Fitting it all in was brutal, but now I know I can deliver under serious pressure." Szymonski proposed bringing a National Women's Soccer League team to Miami.
The program aligns with the Simons' vision of providing early professional opportunities for students. Sean Simon emphasized that "talent is everywhere—and providing earlier access to professional opportunities helps students discover their potential sooner." Stacey Simon added gratitude for those supporting their vision.
The panel of judges included Rob Citrone from Discovery Capital Management, Cindy Citrone from Citrone 33 Foundation, Eric Pincus from Sports Business Classroom and Bleacher Report, Sean Simon from Soundlink Partners, and Alex Fraser from Smart Merchants Processing.
Applications for next year's competition will open in fall 2025-26.
