Governor Dan McKee and Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green, along with the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), announced a statewide event aimed at promoting math education. The Math Extravaganza: Math Matters RI – Count Us In! is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the RI Nursing Education Center in Providence.
The free event will be open to students, families, and educators. It will feature various activities such as math games suitable for all ages, workshops for parents and educators, and a special screening of the movie "Counted Out." Shalinee Sharma, CEO and Co-founder of Zearn, will join as a special guest for a fireside chat led by Commissioner Infante-Green.
Governor McKee highlighted the state's strategic investments in math education through programs like after-school sessions and vacation camps. “With our Math Matters RI campaign, we’re helping students across the state improve their math understanding with the goal of promoting greater academic achievement,” said Governor McKee.
Commissioner Infante-Green emphasized the importance of math in modern career fields such as manufacturing and engineering. “Through our Math Matters RI initiative, we are all coming together to embrace math and build a statewide sense of excitement and enthusiasm around it,” she stated.
Rhode Island State Teacher of the Year Milissa O’Neal underscored the critical role strong math skills play in student success. “We’re proud that Rhode Island teachers will play an integral role in this event," she remarked.
Zearn CEO Shalinee Sharma praised Rhode Island's commitment to making every student proficient in math. “By launching the Math Matters RI initiative...I am honored to join this important event celebrating how every student can succeed in math,” Sharma said.
The initiative began earlier this year with $2.85 million awarded through Learn365RI state grants aimed at improving out-of-school time learning programs focused on mathematics for K-8 students.
Jim Cowen from the Collaborative for Student Success also expressed support for these efforts stating that game nights can effectively boost learning outside traditional classrooms.
While improvements have been noted in RICAS results post-pandemic with more than 30% meeting expectations compared to previous years, challenges remain with SAT scores still below pre-pandemic levels nationally according to NAEP data from 2024.
Educators attending can earn Professional Learning Units (PLUs) by registering before May 23rd via RIDE’s form submission process; similarly interested businesses must register their participation intentions by then too using provided forms on Eventbrite where general attendance registration is also required despite being free-of-charge access-wise overall once completed successfully
