The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has introduced a series of numeracy briefs aimed at enhancing PreK-12 mathematics instruction. Announced by Commissioner Betty A. Rosa, these resources are part of an ongoing numeracy initiative set to continue through the 2025-26 school year. The materials, including a presentation on research and best practices, are available on the Numeracy Initiative website.

Board of Regents Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. emphasized the importance of evolving teaching methods to meet current educational needs: "Mathematics is a fundamental pillar of education, with the power to exponentially enhance students’ potential across all disciplines. While mathematical principles remain constant, our teaching methods must evolve to meet the needs of today’s learners."

Commissioner Rosa highlighted the everyday relevance of mathematics: "Mathematics is woven into the fabric of our everyday lives, from measuring ingredients in the kitchen to keeping score during game night." She noted that strong numeracy skills empower learners both inside and outside the classroom.

The briefs were unveiled at a statewide event on May 13, in collaboration with Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES), major school districts, and smaller city districts. Dr. Deborah Loewenberg Ball, who developed these briefs and serves as a national expert in mathematics education, delivered a keynote address on evidence-based practices for responsible math teaching.

NYSED's commitment includes providing resources for high-quality education focused on numeracy. The Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards (NGMLS), adopted in 2017 by the Board of Regents, outline essential mathematical concepts necessary for functioning in today's world.

Additionally, NYSED's Expanded Math Access Program (EMAP) offers K-8 students free access to First in Math Program (FIM), an online platform with standards-based math games and activities to support grade-level fluency expectations.

A Statewide Mathematics Tournament utilizing FIM will be held on May 31 at the NYS Museum and will include students from grades 6-8 for the first time this year.
