Dr. Michele Harmala - Deputy Superintendent, Educator Excellence, Career and Technical Education, Special Education, and Administrative Law | Michigan Department of Education
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has opened the nomination period for the 2026-27 Michigan Teacher of the Year program. This initiative aims to honor and recognize exceptional teachers throughout the state.
State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice emphasized the importance of acknowledging educators, stating, “Our state has many dedicated teachers who deserve praise for their inspiring work with Michigan students.” He added that these educators provide valuable insights to both the MDE and State Board of Education as part of this program.
Annually, MDE selects 10 Regional Teachers of the Year through a competitive process, from which one is named Michigan Teacher of the Year. The awardees gain opportunities to engage with educational initiatives and policies at a state level and contribute ideas on improving student services in Michigan.
Nominations are open until Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 11:59 p.m., via an online form. Eligible nominees must hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate, have at least five years of certificated teaching experience in Michigan, and be in good standing with their school or district. While nominations can be submitted by anyone from the public, self-nominations by educators are not allowed.
MDE also acknowledges that some intermediate school districts and local education agencies have processes for recognizing local teachers of the year. Representatives from these districts are encouraged to recommend their candidates directly via email to MTOY@Michigan.gov.
