Mike Morath Commissioner of Education | Texas Education Agency
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has announced an extension of its intervention in the Houston Independent School District (HISD), prolonging the authority of the Board of Managers until June 1, 2027. This decision comes as a result of Commissioner Mike Morath's assessment at the two-year mark of the intervention.
Commissioner Morath highlighted significant improvements under the leadership of Superintendent Mike Miles and the Board of Managers. "Houston ISD has always been a district with some of the highest performing schools in the country, but it was also a district that allowed some of its schools to fail students for over a decade," said Morath. He emphasized that while progress has been made, more time is needed to ensure lasting success for students.
The intervention led to year-over-year improvements in student academic performance, special education services, financial controls, operations, and school board governance. To maintain this progress, continued efforts are necessary to strengthen support systems and sustain strong academic outcomes.
Four new appointees have joined the HISD Board of Managers: Edgar Colón, Lauren Gore, Marty Goossen, and Marcos Rosales. These individuals bring diverse backgrounds in law, education, finance, and civic engagement to their roles on the board.
"I extend my thanks to the four departing board members for their work in improving the lives of students in Houston ISD," said Commissioner Morath. He expressed confidence that the new board members will continue focusing on student outcomes and meeting exit criteria.
TEA will keep monitoring HISD's progress towards fulfilling these criteria. The intervention began on June 1, 2023, following systemic deficiencies identified by TEA investigations and legal proceedings.
