Since 2008, Character.org has been recognizing schools for developing Promising Practices that positively impact school culture. These practices involve a range of stakeholders and align with one or more of the organization's 11 Principles.

This week, Character.org acknowledged 230 Promising Practices from schools across the United States and around the world. The narratives provided by these schools in response to two specific questions stood out this year: "What is the story behind your practice?" and "What is one component or feature of your Promising Practice that educators might find most special or unique?"

Four key insights emerged from these responses:

Firstly, school leaders are seeking ways to foster intrinsic motivation among students. Many practices highlighted new approaches encouraging students to act based on internal moral compasses rather than external rewards.

Secondly, schools are adopting annual themes that emphasize character. These themes are deeply integrated into the curriculum throughout the school year, providing a cohesive framework for character education.

Thirdly, schools are encouraging students to set their own character goals. Programs have been developed to help students establish and track personal goals aligned with core values, often with adult mentorship.

Lastly, creative methods are being employed to engage parents and caregivers. Schools have initiated events like Family Story Night and monthly meetings to discuss core values and how they can be reinforced at home.

In conclusion, each Promising Practice focuses on forming caring attachments within the school community. This spirit of connection aligns with Principle 4 – creating a caring school community where everyone feels they belong.

Character.org's coordinator Diana Dodson was acknowledged for her belief in the power of schools to foster character development.
