Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is working to ensure that students are prepared for a future where artificial intelligence (AI) is prevalent in various professional fields. The district has developed an AI readiness framework and a diagnostic assessment tool to measure student preparedness.

The framework, created in 2019 with the help of multiple partners, focuses on six key areas: Data Science, Mathematical Reasoning, Creative Problem Solving, Ethics, Applied Experiences, and Programming. It was developed with input from both district experts and external partners.

In 2025, GCPS collaborated with the ISTE research team to create a diagnostic assessment tool based on this framework. This tool measures student AI readiness by assessing their current knowledge and skills in the specified areas. Unlike summative assessments, these diagnostics help identify gaps and guide educators on where students may need additional support.

The development process involved defining objectives and creating draft questions with input from subject matter experts. The assessment is designed for high school students and includes multiple-choice and Likert scale questions for automatic scoring. Two versions of the pilot assessment were tested at Seckinger High School with about 1,200 students participating.

The research team conducted psychometric analyses to evaluate the reliability of the test items. Data cleaning was performed to remove any questionable response patterns before analysis.

GCPS aims to adapt this tool for other grade levels and incorporate more complex items like performance-based tasks. The district hopes that results from this diagnostic will provide insights into a student's AI readiness alongside other data points such as teacher evaluations and coursework.

This initiative reflects GCPS's commitment to preparing students for an AI-driven world through strategic planning and resource allocation.
