Michigan is in the process of selecting a new state superintendent of instruction, with plans for the appointee to assume office on October 4. The State Board of Education, alongside search firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA), discussed the search strategy during a recent meeting.

The board selected HYA in May to conduct a national search for the new superintendent. Based in Illinois, HYA has over 35 years of experience in recruiting educational leaders, including superintendents.

State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice announced his retirement effective October 3. Board President Dr. Pamela Pugh stated, "The State Board of Education is committed to finding a new state superintendent who will be dedicated to continuing the progress we have made on behalf of Michigan school children under Dr. Rice’s tenure."

Dr. Pugh emphasized that the incoming superintendent should utilize Michigan's Top 10 Strategic Education Plan as a foundation for further advancements. She noted achievements such as record-high graduation rates and expanded Advanced Placement access but stressed that ongoing challenges remain.

HYA officials joined the board meeting to outline the recruitment process. The job will be posted on June 25, followed by candidate screening and public engagement through surveys and discussions to identify desired qualifications for candidates.

First-round interviews are planned for mid-August after initial candidate selection on August 12. Finalists will be chosen shortly after with an aim to select a preferred candidate by August 26.

Subsequent steps include contract negotiations and a comprehensive background check conducted by HYA before formal appointment at the September 9 board meeting.
