The National PTA has issued a statement urging Congress and the Administration to prioritize the well-being of families in upcoming budget decisions. National PTA President Yvonne Johnson expressed concerns over the Senate Finance Committee's recent budget reconciliation bill for fiscal year 2025, which includes provisions for a nationalized voucher program. This program would redirect taxpayer dollars from public schools to private and religious institutions as well as homeschooling.

Johnson highlighted that the Administration's fiscal year 2026 budget proposal also proposes significant cuts in funding for public education. "As federal budget decisions are being made, PTA calls on Congress and the Administration to prioritize the well-being of all children and families in our nation," she stated.

While supporting educational choices within public schools, Johnson emphasized that there is a distinction between these programs and private school voucher programs. She noted that such voucher programs have not effectively improved student achievement, lack accountability, and do not provide adequate services for students most in need.

The budget reconciliation bill also suggests historic funding cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), potentially limiting access to healthy foods for low-income families. Additionally, proposed changes to Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) could restrict access to affordable healthcare for children.

"For over 128 years, PTA has advocated and worked to ensure all schools and families have the proper resources," Johnson said. The association continues to believe that quality federal investments are crucial for children's health and education.

PTA encourages advocates nationwide to voice their concerns to Congress regarding efforts that may limit access to essential federal programs.

National PTA consists of millions of members committed to educational success and family engagement in schools. As a nonprofit organization, it serves as an advocate for public education with membership open to anyone interested in contributing positively toward children's welfare.
