Due to limited data, the prevalence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) educators in the United States is not well understood. Recent analysis using the American Community Survey and Census Pulse has provided new insights into this area. The study found that between 3.3% and 3.5% of LGBTQ+ individuals are employed as teachers in PK-12 education settings. In comparison, a higher percentage of non-LGBTQ+ individuals, ranging from 4.4% to 4.9%, hold teaching positions.
This evidence points to an underrepresentation of LGBTQ+ individuals in the teaching profession compared to their non-LGBTQ+ counterparts. The findings underscore the necessity for further data collection and research to investigate the reasons behind this disparity and explore strategies to address it. Such efforts are important as they likely have significant implications for LGBTQ+ students.
