Dr. Sue Carnell - Chief Deputy Superintendent | Michigan Department of Education
The State Board of Education in Michigan is seeking public input on the qualifications for the next state superintendent. This initiative allows members of the public to express their views through an online survey available on the Michigan Department of Education Superintendent Search webpage. The survey is part of a broader stakeholder engagement process that started this week and will conclude on July 3 at noon. The process includes interviews, focus groups, and forums.
The board is conducting a national search to find a successor for Dr. Michael F. Rice, who announced his retirement effective October 3. "The State Board of Education wants to hear from parents, educators, the business community, students and others as the board completes this critically important process of selecting Michigan’s next school chief," said Board President Dr. Pamela Pugh.
In May, the board selected Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) to lead the search for a new superintendent. HYA has extensive experience in this field with over 1,600 successful leadership placements across various sectors.
HYA will also administer focus groups as part of its engagement strategy. The insights gathered will be compiled into a Leadership Profile Report available mid-July on the Superintendent Search webpage. This report aims to aid in identifying candidates that align with stakeholders' needs.
The job posting for this position is scheduled for June 25. After evaluating potential candidates through stakeholder feedback and thorough vetting by HYA, first-round interviews are tentatively set for August 12. Public interviews will follow during the week of August 18, leading up to final candidate selection by August 26.
Following candidate selection, contract negotiations and background checks will take place before formal appointment at the September 9 meeting. The newly appointed superintendent is expected to assume office on October 4.
