The Louisiana Department of Education has announced Carra "Beth" Melton from Bayou Woods Elementary in St. Tammany Parish as the 2025 Louisiana Public Interest Fellow. This fellowship provides educators with support and resources to lead initiatives that benefit students and schools statewide.
Melton's project will focus on enhancing math fluency, aligning with the state's education priority on math instruction. Dr. Cade Brumley, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education, stated, "The Louisiana Public Interest Fellowship gives some of the top educators in the state the support they need to take their big idea and make an impact that can resonate beyond their parish."
Teaching third-grade math, science, and social studies in St. Tammany Parish Public Schools, Melton aims to improve students' numerical skills and cognitive processes for solving word problems. The initiative also seeks to involve parents by creating math resources and distributing math kits.
Melton will be recognized at the 19th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Awards Gala, co-sponsored by Dream Teachers.
The fellowship is a collaboration between the Louisiana Department of Education and the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). Since its inception in 2018, it has supported projects focused on literacy, career readiness, educator recruitment, and student engagement.
