The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) has announced a significant $55 million infrastructure revitalization project for the State Museum of Pennsylvania. This initiative aims to modernize the museum's mid-century modern building, enhancing its appeal to 21st-century visitors with new dynamic experiences.
The planned upgrades will be the most extensive since the museum's original opening in 1964. The project emphasizes both visitor experience and stewardship, including improved storage areas for sensitive collections. "This transformative project will position the Museum to meet the expectations of 21st century visitors and offer new dynamic experiences," stated PHMC.
Construction is slated to commence in spring 2026. During this period, the museum will remain open until July 2026 to celebrate the United States' 250th anniversary of independence. Following this celebration, it is expected to close from August 2026 until early 2029 for renovations.
In December 2023, PHMC also introduced a new state-of-the-art Pennsylvania State Archives building as part of its ongoing efforts to preserve and present state history effectively.
Key figures involved in this announcement include Andrea Lowery, Executive Director of PHMC; Senator Patty Kim; Representative Nathan Davidson; and Greg Kirk, Deputy Secretary for Capital Programs at the Department of General Services.
