AFT President Randi Weingarten has commented on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision regarding birthright citizenship. The court ruled in favor of former President Donald Trump's challenge to nationwide injunctions that had previously blocked his attempts to end birthright citizenship through executive order.
Weingarten stated, "The Supreme Court’s decision in has broad implications, even if it kicks his illegal efforts to end the constitutional right to birthright citizenship down the road." She expressed concern about the impact of this ruling on lower courts' ability to protect citizens from what she described as "Trump’s most pernicious policy abuses."
She further remarked, "Today, the justices have kneecapped the lower courts’ ability to protect Americans from Trump’s most pernicious policy abuses, making it far more difficult to resolve key questions by requiring additional litigation." Weingarten emphasized the need for courts to act as a safeguard against potential overreach by any administration.
The statement concludes with Weingarten asserting that "today’s decision is an abdication of the court’s duty to protect Americans and our democracy from an out-of-control executive branch."
Randi Weingarten serves as President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), alongside Fedrick C. Ingram as Secretary-Treasurer and Evelyn DeJesus as Executive Vice President. The AFT is part of AFL-CIO, which reserves all rights regarding its materials.
