In recent decisions, the U.S. Supreme Court has issued rulings that have raised concerns about the impact on the LGBTQ+ community. The cases in question are Mahmoud v. Taylor and U.S. v. Skrmetti, both decided by a conservative majority of six justices.

In Mahmoud v. Taylor, the Court imposed new requirements on educators and public schools, which some argue could undermine efforts to provide an inclusive education reflecting the diversity of students in public schools across the nation.

Earlier this month, in U.S. v. Skrmetti, the same group of justices upheld a ban affecting families' access to gender-affirming care, sparking further debate about its implications for family freedoms.

Becky Pringle, President of the National Education Association (NEA), expressed concern over these decisions: "We all deserve the right to live, learn, and thrive no matter our sexual orientation or gender identity—no exceptions." She emphasized that these rulings threaten not only LGBTQ+ youth but also undermine progress toward more inclusive learning environments.

Pringle described Mahmoud v. Taylor as "an attack on inclusivity and on our democracy," highlighting that public education should engage students with diverse ideas and perspectives.

She noted that educators and parents largely support teaching curricula that embrace diversity and allow students to learn about their country's full history: "As educators, we remain committed to ensuring that every student, every family, and every educator knows they are seen and valued."

Addressing U.S. v. Skrmetti's impact on transgender youth healthcare access, Pringle criticized political interference in medical decisions: "All families and their medical providers deserve the right to make medical decisions free from political interference."

The NEA represents over 3 million educational professionals nationwide who are dedicated to creating safe environments for all students regardless of their identities.
