The Michigan Department of Education has expressed concern over the recent notification from the U.S. Department of Education that states will not receive federal Title funding. This funding, which was appropriated by Congress and signed by President Trump on March 15, 2025, supports various educational programs in Michigan.

State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice commented on the situation, stating, “The U.S. Department of Education is hurting students in Michigan and across the country by withholding federal dollars that were appropriated by Congress and signed by President Trump on March 15, 2025.” He emphasized that local school districts were expecting this funding by July 1 to support programs such as migrant education, services for English learners, staff professional development, before- and after-school programs, and academic enrichment.

Dr. Rice highlighted the importance of these funds for economically disadvantaged and vulnerable students in Michigan. He called for the immediate release of these approved funds and mentioned that the Michigan Department of Education is collaborating with other states and legal counsel to assess the impact of this withholding.

In Michigan, the withheld funds include over $5.4 million in Title I-C funds for migrant education, more than $12.8 million in Title III funds for English learners, over $63.7 million in Title II funds for staff professional development, more than $36.7 million in Title IV-B funds for before- and after-school programs, and over $38.3 million in Title IV-A funds for academic enrichment.
