The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) has announced the 2025 results from the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP), revealing a one percentage point increase in overall student proficiency for grades 3–8. In the 2024–2025 school year, 35 percent of students achieved Mastery or above, compared to 34 percent the previous year.
Math proficiency saw notable improvement with a two-point gain. This progress aligns with LDOE’s ongoing strategy to enhance math outcomes statewide. Since 2021, there has been a five percentage point rise in the overall Mastery+ rate for grades 3–8. The current data indicates that 80 percent of school systems either improved or maintained their Mastery+ rate for grades 3–8, and 74 percent did so for grades 3–12.
Dr. Cade Brumley, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education, commented on these developments: “Louisiana teachers are the driving force behind the steady, sustained progress of the past five years. While today’s results show continued movement in the right direction, they also underscore the challenges ahead. We must accelerate efforts to support educators, raise expectations for students, and maintain our laser focus on academic achievement.”
The LEAP results will influence school performance scores set to be released later this year and represent the last under Louisiana's current accountability system. Results from tests taken during the upcoming school year will contribute to performance scores under a revised accountability system expected in late 2026.
This year's LEAP data release is notably early compared to previous years since it provides schools more time to plan based on current data. The LDOE urges school systems to promptly share student results with families and offers parent guides online.
LEAP assesses proficiency in English language arts (ELA), math, science, and social studies across grades 3-12. Scores are categorized into five levels: Unsatisfactory, Approaching Basic, Basic, Mastery, or Advanced; those achieving Mastery or Advanced are deemed proficient.
Social studies results will be available later this year following review by summer educator committees finalizing new test standards introduced in 2024-2025 under Louisiana’s Freedom Framework social studies standards.
