Ashlie Crosson, the 2025 National Teacher of the Year, delivered a speech to the 104th Representative Assembly, highlighting the significance of educators and their role in shaping society. She expressed gratitude towards NEA President Pringle and the leadership team for the opportunity to speak.

Crosson emphasized the collaborative nature of education, stating, "The work we do—in classrooms and libraries and nurses' offices and school buses—is extraordinary." She credited her success to her teachers, counselors, and family members who worked in various educational roles. "I stand here as living proof of our collective influence," she said.

She highlighted the importance of advocating for educators to benefit students: "What’s good for educators is what’s good for students." This idea was reinforced by Adam Weber's mantra from Pennsylvania's Bargaining School.

Crosson shared her journey from being a passive union member to an active participant. The pandemic played a pivotal role in this transformation, as it made her realize the political nature of teaching. Her local union provided essential support during uncertain times, which inspired her to become more involved.

Reflecting on recent events, Crosson noted a shift in urgency at NEA gatherings. Despite challenges, she remains confident that respect begins with educators themselves. "In how we show up... In how we refuse to accept anything less than what our students and our colleagues deserve," she stated.

Crosson advocated for protecting education as a means to safeguard democracy. She illustrated this with stories from her rural community where education has empowered students to achieve significant accomplishments.

Concluding her speech, Crosson reiterated that union solidarity and investment in education are crucial for student success. She quoted Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.”
