The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) is initiating a review of the state's K–12 physical education standards. This effort aims to enhance the role of physical fitness in fostering lifelong health and academic success. The review was approved by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) during its June meeting, aligning with a policy that mandates updates every seven years. The last review occurred in 2017.

Applications are now being accepted for those interested in joining the standards review committees. The LDOE encourages applications from Louisiana physical education teachers, administrators, school system staff, higher education faculty, parents, and community members until July 31.

Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley stated, “Just like literacy and numeracy are building blocks for academic achievement, physical fitness is foundational for lifelong health.” He emphasized that modernizing these standards will better prepare students with essential habits and skills for success both academically and beyond.

The review process will focus on several key areas: strengthening foundational physical fitness skills across different grade levels; ensuring developmentally appropriate motor skills; embedding expectations to support high-quality instruction; and integrating health-focused outcomes that promote wellness.

A steering committee along with two grade-band workgroups (K–5 and 6–12) will lead the review process. These groups will consist of stakeholders from throughout the state who will convene in Baton Rouge starting late October. Meetings will be held at the Claiborne Building and open to public attendance.

Committee selections are set to be submitted to BESE for approval by October. The revised standards are anticipated to be presented to BESE in 2026. Training for implementation is scheduled for the 2026–2027 school year, with full implementation expected in 2027–2028.
