The Michigan Department of Education has expressed support for a lawsuit initiated by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and other attorneys general. The legal action responds to a notification from the U.S. Department of Education, dated June 30, which stated that states would not receive appropriated federal Title funding intended for students and schools.

Dr. Michael F. Rice, State Superintendent, emphasized the impact of this withholding on disadvantaged students: “I appreciate the opportunity to join once again Attorney General Nessel’s efforts to fight this illegal withholding and other unlawful federal actions over the last six months that hurt children in Michigan and nationwide,” Dr. Rice said. He added that schools now face challenges in providing essential programs due to these withheld funds.

State Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Pugh also criticized the decision: “The Trump administration’s decision to withhold these critical funds is not just reckless. It is cruel,” Dr. Pugh said, highlighting its negative effects on children and educators who require significant support.

In conjunction with filing the case, states have sought a preliminary injunction with backing from a declaration by Dr. Rice detailing the adverse effects on children, local school districts, and the Michigan Department of Education.
