Yvonne Johnson, President of National PTA | National Parent Teacher Association
The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has expressed significant concern over the recent Supreme Court decision permitting mass layoffs within the U.S. Department of Education. In a joint statement, Yvonne Johnson, President of National PTA, and Howie Berman, Executive Director, highlighted the potential negative impacts on public school students and families.
"The Supreme Court’s ruling allowing mass layoffs in the U.S. Department of Education is a severe threat to public school students and families in our country," they stated. They emphasized that the department was established to ensure equal educational access for all Americans regardless of their circumstances.
The statement further explained that programs and funding streams managed by the department are crucial for supporting students most in need. Reducing the department's capacity could leave millions without necessary support.
Concerns were also raised about specific divisions within the department. "The staff cuts in the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights... puts students’, parents’ and educators’ rights at risk," they warned. The elimination of research divisions and statistics centers would hinder data-driven decisions in education.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for federal investments in public education. "Our association remains steadfast in our belief that the long-term success of our nation depends on quality federal investments in our public education system."
National PTA includes a diverse membership focused on children's educational success and family engagement in schools.
