Six individuals will be recognized for their contributions to public education in Missouri during the 64th Annual Cooperative Conference for School Administrators. The event, organized by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), will take place on July 28, with over 600 school leaders expected to attend.

“These individuals have worked throughout their lives to ensure that the students of Missouri have the best education possible,” said Commissioner of Education Dr. Karla Eslinger. “DESE is honored to recognize the hard work and dedication of these Pioneers in Education.”

Dr. Bruce Johnson from Stanberry dedicated 29 years to education as a teacher, coach, and administrator in Northwest Missouri. He retired after serving as superintendent for 17 years at Stanberry R-2 School District and continued his involvement in school finance issues.

Sheryl Lawson from Gainesville has spent 43 years teaching elementary school, focusing on enriching her students' experiences beyond standard curricula through various activities.

Governor Michael L. Parson has emphasized increasing state funding for education during his tenure, with significant investments made in K-12 education and new educational programs across Missouri.

Dr. Joylynn Pruitt-Adams had a distinguished career spanning 47 years in special education and administration roles, including serving as superintendent at University City and Riverview Gardens.

William Smart began his career at Lincoln High School before moving to Cole Camp High School, where he served as principal for over three decades. Post-retirement, he remained active as an Activities Director until 2019.

Jim Thompson contributed significantly during his time on the West Plains R-7 school board, promoting projects like constructing new facilities and implementing preschool programs.

The Pioneer in Education awards have been presented by state officials for five decades to honor those who have made notable contributions to public education in Missouri.

Members of the media are invited to attend the award ceremony on July 28 at Campana Hall at Lake Ozark's Lodge of the Four Seasons. DESE Communications can arrange interviews with honorees upon request.
