The National Education Association (NEA) has concluded its decision-making process regarding a proposal that would have seen the organization partner with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). NEA President Becky Pringle stated, "At the recent NEA 2025 Representative Assembly, a recommendation was sent to NEA’s Executive Committee that the National Education Association not partner with the Anti-Defamation League." She clarified that since there is no existing partnership between NEA and ADL, this would have been a proactive measure.
Following a comprehensive review involving consultation with various stakeholders, including civil rights leaders and state affiliates, NEA's Board of Directors voted against implementing this proposal. The board's decision reflects consideration of multiple factors such as alignment with NEA's policies and values, and potential impacts on students and members. Pringle emphasized, "After consideration, it was determined that this proposal would not further NEA’s commitment to academic freedom, our membership, or our goals."
Pringle reiterated NEA's strong stance against antisemitism: "There is no doubt that antisemitism is on the rise. Without equivocation, NEA stands strongly against antisemitism." She also highlighted ongoing efforts by members to combat hate in all forms within educational environments.
While rejecting the proposal does not endorse ADL's entire body of work, Pringle called for ADL support in upholding free speech rights for students and educators. She noted that combating discrimination requires increased resources: "In this time of division, fighting antisemitism, anti-Arab racism, and other forms of discrimination will take more resources."
The statement underscores NEA's dedication to ensuring safe educational spaces for all students irrespective of their backgrounds. As part of future actions, NEA plans to use diverse experts to review materials related to antisemitism education.
The organization continues its commitment towards justice both inside schools and beyond. In closing remarks about their mission amidst ongoing challenges faced by public education today: "No amount of bullying can force us to abandon our commitment."
