Montpelier, Vt.- The Vermont Agency of Education has addressed the recent detention of Superintendent Wilmer Chavarria, acknowledging its impact on the Winooski School District and refugee and immigrant communities across Vermont. The Agency emphasizes its commitment to inclusivity for all students and educators in the state.
"To our students, caregivers, educators, and school leaders, know that your state is a place where we celebrate diversity and we value the different cultural heritages, perspectives, and uniqueness that make us stronger as Vermonters. The Agency stands with the Winooski School District in reaffirming our commitment to ensuring our schools are free from discrimination and that we give every child the opportunity to fulfill their potential, engage deeply with the issues of our time, contribute positively to their communities, and, in doing so, shape a more just future," stated Secretary Zoie Saunders.
The Agency is dedicated to providing equal educational opportunities for all students. It has shared an updated memo on immigration guidance for Vermont schools. This document outlines undocumented students' rights to public education and details regarding immigration enforcement at educational institutions. Updates to this guidance will be made as needed.
