Louisiana superintendent leads civics lessons during Celebrate Freedom Week

Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley visited high school classrooms as part of the state’s annual Celebrate Freedom Week, leading civics lessons focused on the U.S. Constitution, government structure, and citizenship.

During visits to Alexandria Senior High and Mandeville High School, Dr. Brumley conducted interactive sessions with students about foundational ideas in American democracy. “The United States was built on an idea that life could be better,” said Dr. Brumley. “This Constitution helped form our republic. You have the opportunity and obligation to make our great country better every single day.”

At Mandeville High School, Dr. Brumley was joined by state legislators and local judges for a session described as “living civics,” where students examined how constitutional principles function in current governance. The event was held in partnership with the St. Tammany Parish Public School System.

In Rapides Parish at Alexandria Senior High, Dr. Brumley led a lesson focusing on the three branches of government and stressed the importance of having an informed electorate. He discussed how understanding constitutional rights and responsibilities prepares students to contribute to the nation’s future.

Celebrate Freedom Week is observed annually in Louisiana public schools as required by Act 370 from the 2022 Regular Legislative Session. The week coincides with Constitution Day and aims to promote education on freedom-related topics such as founding principles, the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights.

The observance supports Louisiana’s Freedom Framework social studies standards, which prioritize analysis of primary sources and civic reasoning skills among students.
