Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced that the state's Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday will return this year, running from August 1 through August 31. The initiative gives families a month-long period to purchase school supplies and other items without paying sales tax.
Governor DeSantis stated, “Proud to deliver additional sales tax holidays, including the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday that begins on August 1. With the new school year just around the corner, Florida families can save on back-to-school shopping during the tax holiday for the entire month of August. By cutting taxes, empowering parents, and growing our economy, we're making it easier for people to live, work, and thrive in the Free State of Florida.”
The announcement comes as Florida continues to report low unemployment rates and holds a AAA credit rating from major agencies. The state also maintains one of the lowest per-capita tax burdens nationally. Earlier this year, Governor DeSantis approved a budget for Fiscal Year 2025–26 which included $2 billion in total tax relief measures. These include permanently ending the Business Rent Tax and implementing targeted sales tax holidays aimed at supporting residents.
This year's tax relief package is set to provide $450 million in savings through various sales tax holidays. During August's Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, exemptions apply to specific items: school supplies priced at $50 or less; clothing, footwear, and apparel costing $100 or less; learning aids up to $30; and personal computers with accessories priced at $1,500 or less when purchased for noncommercial use.
