Applications for the federal Charter Schools Program (CSP) have doubled in the most recent cycle, according to an announcement last week from the Department of Education. The CSP, which has operated for over 30 years, accounts for less than one percent of all K-12 federal funding but is credited with supporting enrollment growth and student achievement in charter schools.
The CSP has contributed to the opening and expansion of thousands of public charter schools across 43 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C., serving more than 3.8 million students nationwide. Many of these schools are located in underserved communities.
Funding for the CSP increased by $60 million this year—the first such increase since fiscal year 2019. Prior to this, program funding had remained unchanged. Supporters say that continued investment will allow more families access to educational opportunities provided by charter schools.
Awards for this cycle are expected to be announced in September 2025.
