The Nevada State Board of Education has chosen six finalists to interview for the role of Superintendent of Public Instruction. The board made its selections during a meeting on Wednesday, narrowing down from 19 applicants through a blind review process.

The candidates moving forward are Dr. Lisa Coons, Dr. Sylvia Mitchell, Dr. Heather Sanchez, Amy Suman, Dr. Victor Wakefield, and Dr. Darryl Wyatt. These individuals will be interviewed in person on August 28 or 29 in Las Vegas during public meetings.

“Following a rigorous review of a highly qualified applicant pool, we are pleased to invite a select group of outstanding finalists to the interview stage,” said Dr. Katherine Dockweiler, President of the Nevada State Board of Education. “Each candidate brings a distinct portfolio of experience, leadership, and vision aligned with our commitment to educational excellence.”

The application materials for all candidates—excluding names and other identifying details—are available on the Nevada Department of Education’s website under July 30, 2025 State Board of Education Support Materials.

At the same meeting, board members also discussed and decided on matters related to the search process such as which interview questions will be asked, what performance tasks will be included, how interviews will be formatted, and which rubrics will be used.

Once interviews are complete and as required by Nevada law (NRS 385.150), the board will recommend three qualified candidates to Governor Lombardo for final selection.
